“Get it out of me! Aymon! Aymon!”

Rinaldo left his mother’s doorway and ran outside to the woodpile. Lord Aymon held a stack of logs in his arms. Rinaldo pulled at Aymon’s pant leg.

“AYMON!” Aya bellowed. “GET IT OUT!”

Aymon dropped the wood and hurried to his wife’s side. Aya was gray-faced and panting. Blood seeped between her legs.

“I’m here, my dear,” Aymon soothed. “Plenty of time.” Her labor had already lasted many hours. Far longer than with Rinaldo.

“It’s tearing me apart!” Aya yelled, pulling at the sheets and straining her legs. “Do something! Take it out of me!”

Aymon wiped his hands against his tunic. He knelt once again between Aya’s legs.

“Almost,” he said calmly. “Hold on.”

“Now!” Aya shouted. “Get it out of me now!” Her breathing was shallow and rapid. She screamed and strained the baby downward.

The little boy Rinaldo stood in the doorway with his eyes tightly shut, hands over his ears.

“Here now,” Aymon said. “Let go, Aya. Push now.”

Aya wailed as the baby tore through her flesh. Aymon pulled the child free and pronounced her a girl. He wiped the baby with a fresh cloth before laying her on Aya’s chest.”

“Your daughter,” Aymon said gently.

Aya drew up her legs and turned her face away. “Take it outside and kill it.”
